fucking alcoholics

had an awful fucking run in with my dickhead alcoholic roommate.

basically he thinks i’ve been having people “stay here without paying rent” all the time. I’ve had two couch surfers, one was one night, one was a couple of days, and right now, my best friend from college is here. He called me out in front of my friend while he was fucking hammered, telling me how i bring in all sort of “queer riff raff” and how he wants to bash in my friends’ “queer little face”. Fuck that guy. So happy I move next week, but i’m going to start packing tomorrow and hopefully move out sooner, or bounce around on couches for a few days. Who the fuck does he think he is? there’s a respectable way to say “hey, you’re having too many people here” and let me answer, then you can be a drunken fucking lowlife asshole who won’t let me get a word in edgewise and drunkenly yell at me. asshole. The fact of the matter is i pay rent too and whoever I have in my own fucking room is none of his business. I’ve had ONE dinner in the two months i’ve lived here in the COMMON kitchen with ONE other person, and he goes apeshit.

fuck that guy, seriously. i can’t wait to get the fuck out.

Update on my day

so i cancelled my trial shift. My one job at Healthy Living (doing front of house stuff at the café) has offered me full time employment. In a few months I’ll be eligible for health insurance for the first time in years, and i get a raise in two weeks, and with that raise and the hours I’ll be getting I won’t be forced to work two jobs. Giving my two weeks notice at the kitchen I work at tomorrow (because i hate being paid as dishwasher for doing line cook work, and from the sounds of it I will still be paid less than what I’ll be making at the market café). The hours will take some getting used to (7a-3p or 1p-9a), but i’ll have FULL DAYS off, which I haven’t had since I was unemployed, and other awesome benefits (hello 10% off beer purchases, 20% off wine purchases, 50% off café purchases!). Things are looking up.

Matt gets in tomorrow, i’m so stoked. It’s been almost 1 full year since I’ve seen that kid and I miss him. He’s one of my best friends and we skyped all the time while he was in Buenos Aires, but seeing him in person will rock my motha fuckin sox. Then the moment he leaves i’m going to have to start moving out. sheeit, changes!

 

I went to a show tonight. My buddy Emmett had his EP release show for his stuff as The Acoustic Set (his bandcamp is empty right now, but i’ll post something when it’s up). He did an awesome job. This schedule has been killing me though so I didn’t stay for the whole thing (and there were only like 10 people there). The other bands were alright but nothing to write home about.

After the show I hung out with my friend Taylor and his brother who is visiting. His brother, Gordon, and I geeked out over some post-rock while drinking some beers. We’re going to have a music swap on Wednesday. Holla!

 

Crazy Week

So this week is to blog about anything as long as we blog? Awesome, I can do that. Let’s jump start this community.

I’ll start by recapping my week. All of the things i tried/learned were related to cooking. Some delicious vegan cookies (chocolate mint, hell yeah), pan sauces, searing methods, some different knife methods (i bought a book on knife skills, i’m actively trying to improve that)…shit i don’t know what else. I’ve been working like crazy.

I also went to Montreal and saw two friends I haven’t seen in almost a year. I only had about 18 hours between shifts, and that was my weekend, but it was so worth it to go to Montreal. I was so happy to see them. I just wish I could’ve gone to the anarchist book fair this weekend, but it didn’t work out.

I’ve had a couch surfer staying with me since Thursday. She’s pretty rad. She’s leaving tuesday when my buddy is coming up, and I haven’t seen him since his graduation last May. He’s been living in Buenos Aires and working there for the past year. Holy shit i’m so stoked to see him.

Learnin’ shit

So this week is learning new things, right? Awesome. Way better than last week’s task, which I just didn’t do. Mostly because it was awful and also I started working my second job so i’ve been working doubles every day. 

So today, what did I learn? well, for one, I learned that working a kitchen that is staffed and prepped properly when it’s not normally that way is a much better experience!

But I jest. I did actually learn some cooking shit today. I learned how to blacken something properly in a sautée pan, and more specifically I learned how to blacken catfish/how to tell when fish is done. (I love cooking, but seeing as i was vegetarian long before I started cooking anything seriously and since I’ve been vegan for the last 8 years, cooking animals is not something i’ve encountered in my personal life. Been an interesting learning curve.)

I also learned how to properly execute making a parmesan crisp. My crisps were beautiful and shaped perfectly, and those plates of Eggplant Parm looked dank as fuck. I wish I took a photo.

Things i did not learn: stuff in the oven is hot, and oven are hot, both will burn you.

So the last two days have been alright.

Friday I didn’t do much except read and then go to work. I was cooking on the line, only my second shift doing that, and things went well. The chef told me she’s trying to get me 5 nights a week cooking, so hopefully that’ll happen soon and I won’t have to wash dishes anymore. I did fuck up once, but that’s to be expected. It was pretty busy too, a bit of a challenged but definitely manageable. 9/10

Then my friend Emmett came over and we drank most of a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon. It was his birthday this week, that’s what I got him. He housed the whiskey and I ended up walking him home, which is two miles from where I live. So i had a good 4 mile walk round trip on a clear evening. 10/10.

Yesterday though was brutal. I didn’t drink that much the night before, but I was hungover as shit. Only left my bed to puke. 1/10

When i started to feel a bit better I went downstairs and one of my housemates was like “yo, want to check out the asian market with me?” so I tagged along for that. Found a new place for low priced groceries and awesome sauces and cheap rice…10/10.

I came back home, and I went back into bed. Watched some Die Hard 2, and was going to spend my evening smoking and watching action movies but then I got a text from a friend about the Rock Lotto that I had forgot about. Local musicians were put into random bands as a benefit concert for girls learning music in Vermont. So I put some clothes on, brushed my teeth, and headed out to the Monkey House. Along the way I got pulled over for having a headlight out but was let off with a warning, 3/10 because of the inconvenience, and 5/10 for the cop being somewhat understanding.

The show itself was amusing and I got to try a tasty beer (Jahva Imperial Coffee Stout from Southern Tier, so good!) 8/10.

Then I came back home and finished Die Hard 2. I was going to watch Iron Man 2 but by then it was like 2 am so I crashed out.

 

Today I haven’t done much yet. Going to work in 3 hours, then going to do laundry and read. About to make some tasty breakfast. Or lunch! I haven’t decided which it’s going to be yet.

Today was a good day.

Woke up late, immediately checked my email and found out I got the job I interviewed for yesterday! 10/10

Was heading out to get coffee with a friend and found I had a package which contained some CDs and a Tshirt I was waiting for. 10/10

(The package was for donating to Ramshackle Glory‘s kickstarter campaign to get a van. It’s all folk punk, part of the Savage Wasteland Music Collective and you can hear everything on their bandcamp.)

Work was slow and I got out an hour early. 10/10. And I get an extra shift actually cooking tomorrow. 10/10.

Maybe going out tonight? we’ll see!

Today…I’m unsure what the overall rating is so I’m going to take the average at the end.

Woke up early to go to a job interview that I think went well (I guess I’ll know if it went well or not in the next day or two) – 6/10

Ate an awesome carb-loaded lunch/brunch thingy afterwards, 9/10.

Got some reading done 10/10

Went to work, got there early, and was immediately slammed until closing. 4/10. Good for my cooking, bad for the whole me having to do dishes part of it afterwards.

Now i’m drinking some awesome local cider with whiskey to relax and listening to music, i’d give that an 8/10

And oh, i got to pick up a farm share that has lots of awesome stuff in it, including this cider (my buddy who gets the farm share is in Liberia, so last week and this week I got to get his stuff. Free veggies! What’s not to love!) 10/10.

Otherwise, I didn’t leave the house again. So I guess that brings today’s average to….7.8/10

Fingers crossed I get good news tomorrow.

So i wanted to update quickly. But i’d give today an overall 8/10

I woke up late, 10/10.

Had some great coffee 10/10.

Lined up a job interview tomorrow 8/10 (because let’s be honest, having money is great, but working sucks).

Did some shit on the internet while looking at and listening to random good shit, 6/10.

Went to work, 5/10

Then hung out with a friend and drank a 40 for his birthday, 9/10.

So i guess that averages to an 8/10. I hope the interview goes well tomorrow. It’s only 1:15 am so i’m hoping to get an early night, we’ll see how tomorrow goes.
